I have been told that my art "feels like a protest." and to that I said, Thank you.
Because, I paint the things that I want to shout.
I describe my work as ultra-current, counter/pop art. My main inspiration is pushing the societal narrative of how we view, think, and speak about women.
I enjoy painting bold and bright artwork that can't be missed, a combination of a billboard and a warning sign. I pour meaning behind every paint stroke, I want to provide a meaningful and thought-provoking experience, that allows the viewer to reflect inward on their own experiences with labels and biases.
Thank you for viewing my artwork, and I hope you feel my love and passion for painting.

The first of the RIOT GRRRL series.
This artist self-portrait was inspired by a paper bag, a paper bag from a Cannabis Dispensary, that had large red letters on the side, MARIJUANA...
A warning? of its legal, BUT still somewhat taboo and highly regulated contents.
This self-portrait explores the feeling like you are a walking warning sign to society, and the stickiness of labels throughout our lives.
The RIOT GRRRL series celebrates women who live outside of society's standards, embracing their ferocity and voice.
Artist Self-Portrait
The "Title Track" of the series.
Heavily inspired by the punk feminist RIOT GRRRL music movement of the 90's, the RIOT GRRRL series is a love letter to "difficult" women, "intimidating" women, weird girls, punk girls, goth girls, nerdy girls, and every woman in the world.
The series showcases real-life RIOT GRRRLS in artist, Jenny Stegemoeller's life.
Women who take up space, who make their voices heard, and live their life however they want. Notice how RIOT remains the main focus of the figure's vision, but she remains calm with a slight smile, because she is sitting in her power, does not have time for anyone's shit and is taking a nice medicated smoke break, because she DESERVES IT.
The pattern behind her points forward, because knowing your power is the way to move forward.
Artist Statement: Organized Religion is often used as a vehicle for violence against women and silencing their stories.
The figure, a beautiful woman with long hair, is she burning? There is an orange glow around her, that is only overshadowed by her green glowing horns.
The green glowing horns are inspired by a social media photo filter, but this image has been real for so many women over ages and ages.
She sits in front of a black and white arrow pointing up, where the white is the false purity of the cleansing fire.
Her stare doesn't have fear, but commands respect. She is in control as she manipulates the smoke, "French inhaling", her fate.

Written by Maryah:
Burn, baby, burn -- because silence was never an option. I'm a fat, queer, Black radical, a stylist, a storyteller, and a riot all on my own. I set fires with my voice, my hands, my art.
From the protest lines to the podcast mic to the salon chair, I bring heat to every space I enter.
Hair is my canvas, rebellion is my language, and beauty is my weapon.
RIOT isn't just a phase -- it's a lifelong fight for liberation, love, and unaplogetic self-expression.

The Shine Series is inspired by the Blaxploitation Cinema era of the 1970's that challenged white norms in Cinema at that time.
These women sit very comfortably in a very natural nude state, which is why I felt painting the figures on wood felt beautiful and poetic.
Some might think the women are exposed, or maybe even suggestive. However, that is a cause for pause and reflection, because these women are sitting in their own power, which radiates in color behind them. They stare deep, unrelenting and unbothered by your opinion of their nudeness.
